So much has changed she’s not just my old best friend I once knew. Every time I told her I wasn’t going to lose my best friend. Every time I found her only 3 of them I fought to bring her back. The lyrics were slightly altered to reflect the father/ daughter relationship. This release of ‘Changes’ was an offshoot, and Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath fans were pretty much universal in panning the release. This performance occurred in 2003 around the time that Ozzy and his family were popular as part of a dreadful reality TV series called ‘The Osbournes’. The legendary guitarist was a part of every incarnation this band put forth to its adoring fans.įor today’s cover version, I will first share a rendition offered by Ozzy and his daughter Kelly. Interestingly, the only constant through Black Sabbath’s 51 year career is the indefatigable Tony Iommi. It was reintroduced much later when the original quartet reunited in 1997. ‘Changes’ was a part of Black Sabbath’s set list for a couple of tours before taking a rest. “We will probably do ‘Changes’ on stage with a Mellotron but we’ll never take strings on stage with us or anything like that.” Ozzy Osbourne Ozzy Osbourne put this concern to rest pretty swiftly when he said Since Black Sabbath’s fans were very devoted to the heavy metal style the band had forged they became slightly concerned that Sabbath was going soft. The Black Sabbath drummer had recently separated from his wife and Butler channeled the emotions he perceived into the heartfelt lyrics we all know now. Main lyricist, Geezer Butler was intrigued by the melody he was hearing and began to write something for his friend Bill Ward. At the time guitarist, Tony Iommi was experimenting with the piano as an instrument in order to diversify his songwriting. A combination of factors led to its composition. Ironically, ‘Changes’ was a contrast to everything Black Sabbath had released up until that point in their short career. ![]() Today’s feature song is ‘Changes’ from Black Sabbath’s fourth release known as ‘Volume 4’. Black Sabbath would become one of the most influential hard rock acts in the history of music pioneers of what would become known as heavy metal. This was the early days of what would evolve into Black Sabbath in less than a year. They had recently trimmed their act from six musicians to four. At the time the band was called Earth and it consisted of Bill Ward, Tony Iommi, ‘Geezer’ Butler and Ozzy Osbourne. This is exactly what happened at Henry’s Blueshouse at the Crown Hotel in Aston. Imagine enjoying a pint in a dingy blues bar in Birmingham, England on this day in 1968, and four up and coming local lads hop on the stage and begin to play. ![]()
